How did the Nazi party take power?

  • Introduction - Originally called the German workers party - They had a 25 point program (examples include abolish Treaty of Versailles, give good benefits to the old).
  • Munich Putsch - unsuccessful - Took over government meeting - 16 Nazis were killed but Hitler escaped - Hitler was charged with treason and this gave a lot of publicity to his ideas and they were reported in every main newspaper.
  • Golden years - 1924-29 the nazis rebuilt - Through the golden years the Nazis lost support - Everything was going well so people didn't need extremist groups.
  • Rise of the Nazis - The wall street crash had disastrous effects on Germany (American loads recalled etc) Unemployment rocketed and many people became bankrupt.
  • 1932 elections went well for the Nazis.
  • Nazi strengths - Hitler's speeches, propaganda, policies, criticisms of Weimar, well organised, flexible, promises for everyone.
  • Weimar weaknesses - Proportional representation, president too old and out of touch, signed Treaty of Versailles so lost support from public from the start, they printed more money which caused hyperinflation.
  • Depression - businesses closed, unemployment rocketed, factory workers sacked - Weimar's fault for printing more money - Hitler had promises to solve this. The Weimar raised taxes, cut wages all unpopular policies.
