Primary employment: Taking raw materials directly from the earth or sea (Farmers, forestry workers and miners).

Secondary employment: The processing and manufacturing of the primary products (Steel workers, ship builders and furniture workers).

Tertiary employment: Providing a service for the public (Education, health, transport).

Quaternary employment: Providing information and expertise (computer worker, microchip manufacturer).
