The plates move, floating on the soft rock, beneath the lithosphere.

They are moved by the currents created in the magma of the mantle which then partly sticks to the crust and moves the plate

These currents being created by gravity and the Earth's magnetic field, as part of this magma is molten iron

Most earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain forming takes place at plate boundaries.
