Historical Honeypot - Stonehenge:
- Attracts thousands of visitors each year.
- It is as old as many of the pyramids in Egypt.
- You used to be able to wander around the stones but because of graffiti it is cordoned off now.
- Site has been redeveloped over the last 5 years. The car park has been enlarged, a gift shop, restaurant and toilets have also been added.
- A tunnel has been built from the car park to the stones.
- Concern about the effects on stones from busy A303. A tunnel for the traffic has now been approved.
- There is a desire to build a more dramatic multimedia centre with further facilities.
- There is also damage from weathering to the stones.
- Stonehenge is a worship place for druids on the longest day. There is now a limit on the number of worshippers allowed in.
- Situated in Wiltshire; 2 miles west of Amesbury.
- Stonehenge is run by English Heritage.
Leisure Honeypot - Alton Towers:
- Situated in Staffordshire near Stoke-on-Trent.
- There are thousands of visitors yearly.
- Many schools visit Alton Towers as well as many other groups. There are discount rates on groups to encourage this.
- Alton Towers used to be a Stately Home with a small funfair.
- It has now developed into a major theme park.
- Alton Towers has a new ride built each year to encourage visitors to come back.
- Access is only by long winding country roads! No main road access.
- It is based in quite isolated countryside.
- Large rides cause visual pollution to neighbours.
- There are many shops, restaurants etc within the park.
- The litter problem is sorted out internally.
- Large areas of countryside are taken over for parking.
- There is a problem with traffic congestion around the park at opening and closing times.
