Growth and Reproduction
Growth is the increase in size that most organisms do. It is caused by the making of new protoplasm and usually includes cell division. It can be measured by:
Increase in mass
Increase in dried mass (plants)
Increase in length (roots etc)
Development is the increase in complexity of an organ. The cells that are formed take on different functions as they grow
Reproduction is the making of a new organism
Asexual reproduction
One parent
No gametes
Mitosis forms offspring which then grow
Identical genes to parent
Rapid growth in good conditions
Keeps varieties the same
Sexual reproduction
Two parents
Gametes present
Meiosis forms gametes which fuse in pairs
Different mix of genes
Survival in new or poor conditions
Develops new varieties
Examples of Asexual reproduction include: cuttings, bulbs, and runners
