GCSE Biology> Human Biology> Growth and Reproduction
Growth is the increase in size that most organisms do. It is caused by the making of new protoplasm and usually includes cell division. It can be measured by:
Increase in mass
Increase in dried mass (plants)
Increase in length (roots etc)

Development is the increase in complexity of an organ. The cells that are formed take on different functions as they grow

Reproduction is the making of a new organism

Asexual reproduction

Sexual reproduction

One parent

Two parents

No gametes

Gametes present

Mitosis forms offspring which then grow

Meiosis forms gametes which fuse in pairs

Identical genes to parent

Different mix of genes

Rapid growth in good conditions

Survival in new or poor conditions

Keeps varieties the same

Develops new varieties

Examples of Asexual reproduction include:
cuttings, bulbs, and runners
